Joshua David Childers (June 17, 1990-August 30, 2012), the most important character (besides me) in my book Prodigals: A Sister’s Memoir of Appalachia and Loss, was a cartoonist, screenwriter, director, and puppeteer, life pursuits not at all less important because he died before making money at any of them.

He also loved hotdogs, New York City, trees, Marlboro Reds, bass fishing, paylakes, canoes, cats and dogs (in moderation), and spending time with family and friends. He loved films (especially by David Lynch, Werner Herzog, Spike Jonze, Jim Jarmusch) and comics (especially by Tove and Lars Jansson and Robert Crumb). He loved The Office and Seinfeld. I’m sure I’m leaving out something desperately important and wish I could ask him.
I’m including pictures of a few of his drawings and links to some of the videos at his youtube channel, Smoovies, so you can get a sense of the way he saw the world.
